I'm curious to know, as a web designer myself.

Would you guys prefer a custom made theme unique to you for $$$ (let's say $100), a premium theme for $ (let's say $30) that you have seen before but mainly unpopular, or a free theme that is extremely common for your forum/website?

Custom Theme would be always good for starting a website. Although i have seen many of the popular forums using premium or even free available themes. It is required for the first impression, but its not the main part. I am using a custom theme myself in my forum, So thats my point of view BTW.

I would get the premium theme and customize it into a custom theme since I can tweak things but am not so professional as to start a forum theme from scratch.
