I use Adobe Photoshop CS5 to make graphics, although I don't really make many designs/graphics.

Photoshop has a wide variety of features and tools which are really useful, but I firmly believe that it is too overpriced. Many people cannot afford purchasing it, that's why most of them decide to download it for free. However, they don't know that there are many Photoshop Alternatives.
For example, GIMP is a free image editing software which has many feature like Photoshop. Unfortunately, it is not so user-friendly and easy-to-use and it is not so popular.
Another good software is LiveQuartz. I had been using it for some months on my iMac. It doesn't have so many tools, but you can do the simplest things. For example, adding text, resizing an image and changing some colors are some easy tasks which can be completed using LiveQuartz.
Personally, I am currently using Photoshop CS5, GIMP and LiveQuartz!

Corel Photopaint, 3DS MAX, Poser Pro. I'm looking at adding Z Brush to my toolkit.
